Your Guide to Pulsed Light Hair Removal

A fast, comfortable, and permanent alternative.

Permanent Hair Reduction Through Pulsed Light

The Old Solutions

If you live with unwanted hair, you've probably tried some of the typical solutions, such as shaving, waxing, and electrolysis. If so, you've also found that:

  • Shaving is a daily nuisance.
  • Waxing is painful and only a short-term solution.
  • Electrolysis is effective, but since it only treats one hair follicle at a time, it's not practical for large areas and is extremely time-consuming.

The Pulsed Light Alternative

Palomar Pulsed Light Systems offer a lasting solution for unwanted hair:

  • Permanent: Concentrated pulses of light loosen the hair and disable the cells responsible for new hair growth.
  • Fast: Small areas, such as the underarms or upper lip, can be treated in 10 minutes or less, and even large areas, like the back or legs, can be treated in under a half hour.
  • Comfortable: Various cooling methods keep the light pulses mild and skin-safe, allowing for more comfortable treatments than electrolysis and waxing. No pretreatment anesthetic is required as in many laser treatments.
  • Convenient: Unlike waxing, there is no need to let hair grow out between treatments. You can remain hair free all the time.
  • Affordable:  Because of its effectiveness, IPL treatment is usually faster and much less expensive than laser based technologies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Palomar pulsed light hair removal work?

Palomar Systems use specialized hand pieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as hair reduction, sunspot removal, and acne treatment.

The Palomar hair removal hand pieces emit pulses of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.

How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger lens than lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result. Pulsed light also targets the lighter-colored hair that lasers are unable to affect. Because of its effectiveness, IPL treatment is usually much faster and much less expensive than laser based technologies.

What body areas can I get treated?

Any area, except directly around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs and back can all be treated.

What are Palomar pulsed light treatments like?

Your treatment provider will move the hand piece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed.

What should I expect after treatment?

  • Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.
  • The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin.
  • At any given time, some of your hair is not in a phase of active growth. Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair.

  • Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.
  • Sunspots/Sun Damage: The sunspots will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 1-3 weeks
  • Spider Veins: Vessels may disappear after treatment or they may appear darker and then fully or partially fade within 10-14 days.
  • Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve complete clearance of sunspots and spider veins.

Age Spots

Age spots are also known as brown spots, liver spots, or sun spots.  Along with discoloration and wrinkling, age spots are signs of sun damaged skin.  They usually increase in number with age.  They tend to occur on the sun exposed areas of the body as discrete round brown discolorations. This is particularly true for the hands, arms, or face.  They occur as a single spot or there may be multiple spots.

Specific wavelengths of pulsed light target the pigment in these spots.  Pulsed light is very effective in treating these lesions.  Pulsed light treatment is fast and painless.  After treatment, lesions darken and crust and are naturally sloughed off within two weeks.

Your Guide to Laser Leg Vein Treatments

Effective, Skin-safe, and Comfortable

The Palomar System

Laser Leg Vein Clearance
Many people live with visible leg veins, which make them feel embarrassed to wear shorts, skirts, and swimsuits. In the past, this problem could only be solved through painful procedures and surgery, but those days are mercifully over.

The Palomar Handpiece offers a more comfortable and effective leg vein treatment. Its non-invasive laser pulses cause unsightly vessels to fade from view in a few treatments or less. This system also offers excellent clearance of spider veins on the face and other body areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Palomar laser leg vein treatment  work?

Lasers deliver concentrated light in a specific wavelength of the spectrum. Each wavelength is absorbed by a different target, such as pigment, blood, or water. The light pulses heat the blood within the leg vein. The heat of the blood affects the vessel lining, which causes the vessel to constrict and eventually fade from view.

How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger lens than lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result. What are Palomar laser leg vein treatments like?

Your treatment provider will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed.

Are these treatments safe? Are they painful?

Palomar leg vein treatments are completely skin-safe and comfortable. The handpiece  delivers its energy in one smooth, gentle pulse, to protect the skin from a sharp rise in temperature. Temperature rise causes pain in other IPL systems and lasers that do not use Palomar's smooth pulse delivery.

What should I expect after treatment?

  • Immediately after treatment you will see any of these three possible outcomes:
    • The vessel will disappear
    • The vessel will darken
    • The vessel will shrink
  • The surrounding skin may turn pink and be slightly swollen for up to 24 hours.
  • Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve full clearance of leg veins.

Your Guide to Pulsed Light Acne Treatments

An effective alternative to oral and topical medications.

Acne Treatment: The Pulsed Light Alternative
Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States, affecting not only teenagers, but up to 80 percent of people in their 20s and 30s*. This stubborn condition is typically treated with oral and topical medications, which can produce good results but often with undesirable side effects.

Palomar Pulsed Light Systems offer an effective alternative acne treatment. Palomar systems deliver concentrated light pulses which attack acne on two fronts:

  • Destroys acne bacteria for a quick clearance of current acne breakouts.

  • Penetrates into the hyperactive sebaceous glands to slow down the production of sebum, which can clog pores and trap bacteria to cause future acne breakouts.

Before Palomar          After Palomar

What should I expect after treatment?

  • You can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some mild swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.
  • There may be an initial flare-up of acne, similar to the kind seen after a peel procedure or the beginning of a new topical or oral acne medication.
  • Some of the blemishes may appear redder. They will then fade after 2-3 weeks.
  • A 40% reduction in the number of lesions and the prevention of new lesion formation can be expected following your treatment course.

Before Palomar             After Palomar

The result is fast resolution of current breakouts and a long remission time between treatments, without any drug-related side effects.

Scar Reduction

Effective, Skin-safe, and Comfortable

The Palomar Handpiece offers a more comfortable and effective scar reduction treatment. Its non-invasive laser pulses cause vessels to shrink in a few treatments or less. This causes the scar's redness to fade.  As vessels shrink, the scar will flatten and become less painful.

Clinical situations that respond to treatment include:

Any red painful scar:  surgical incision, traumatic

Red raised scars as a result of:  Breast surgery, Hysterectomy, Cesarean  Section, Abdominal Surgery, Hypertrophic Scars

Razor Bumps

Razor bumps is also called shaving bumps or ingrown hairs. The medical name is pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB).  PFB is caused when hairs penetrate outside the hair follicle.  This happens when curly hairs curl under the skin or when a hair tip sharpened by shaving penetrates the follicle wall.  The hair becomes imbedded under the skin outside the hair follicle.  This sets up a foreign body reaction which leads to a bump, soreness, redness and possibly pustule formation.

PFB is a common condition in mens beards and can also occur in a womens bikini area secondary to shaving.  Occasionally it occurs in the armpit.  PBF can lead to pustule formation and if left untreated, can lead to secondary infection. The same hairs tend to be involved over and over.

IPL targets these problem areas in two ways.  If desired, hair can be completely removed (as in women's bikini area).  Also, selective hair removal can be accomplished as in the case of a man desiring to retain his beard. Either treatment can eliminate the problem area(s).

Pulsed light is a fast, safe, and effective treatment for PFB.  No anesthesia is required since there is usually little or no pain involved in the treatment.

PFB Treatment: The Pulsed Light Alternative

Palomar Pulsed Light Systems offer an effective alternative PFB treatment. Palomar systems deliver concentrated light pulses which attack PFB on two fronts:

  • Destroys bacteria for a quick clearance of pustules and inflammation.

  • Destroys the hair bulb which loosens the hair and prevents it from regrowing.

The result is fast resolution of current breakouts. More than one treatment may be required to prevent recurrences.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a reddish discoloration of the face that may also be associated with bumps or spider vein formation.  This discoloration may be transient or permanent.  This flushed appearance occurs most often in fair skinned individuals usually in the central portion of the face.  It was once thought to be caused by alcoholism or acne.

In the past, rosacea was treated with various creams, antibiotics, other medications or dietary therapy.  Pulsed light is a rapid, painless, and very effective therapy for rosacea.  Besides rapid improvement in skin color, rosacea patients may also see an improvement in skin tone, spider veins and age spots.
